Dear Vega ISD Community:
As we enter into the last half of September, we are all settling into our school year routines.
It’s important to continue working with your student on their academic progress, sitting down with them and having your student explain their lessons and how they solve their homework problems.
Anytime students can verbalize their thinking processes and their learning, they reinforce their understanding of the concept.
Most important of all, remember to read to your student at home and have them read to you.
Hearing the written word and reading books are the best way to build literacy skills for students.
Strong literacy skills have a direct impact on academic success.
Last week’s Homecoming Festivities were a lot of fun for the entire district. We were able to celebrate at the pep rally and recognize the Homecoming Court. Many of our high school students also took turns holding the flags during the entire football game on Friday night in commemoration of the the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
This past Wednesday our school district conducted our annual bus evacuation drill to an off-site location. We also had a practice reunification exercise as well. These drills are important because they provide our students and staff with the opportunity to become familiar with what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency. This is a heavy lift for our staff to plan, prepare and execute such a comprehensive exercise. This is why this type of drill to the degree in which we do it is not often done in other places. We appreciate their hard work in making this happen. We also appreciate our partners in law enforcement who participated in the drill and provided valuable feedback to us as we continue to make improvements to our plans.
This past weekend our junior high and high school cross country runners went to Amarillo and did a great job. Eight of our runners placed in their events! The 7th and 8th grade junior high football teams opened up their season at Shamrock and played well. The junior high girls volleyball team traveled to Sanford-Fritch for their games. The high school JV volleyball team lost a close match against Dalhart last week while the Varsity Volleyball team got a split last week dropping their match against Dalhart and winning against Wildorado. The Volleyball team has played very well and they have played against a very difficult schedule against mostly 4A and 5A teams. The Varsity football team improved to 3-0 on the year with a dominating win over Shamrock. Check out the district’s facebook page for pictures and more information.
