Dear Vega ISD Community:
As you know, last week the School Board approved the hybrid 4-day calendar for next school year. Our parents, community, students, and staff all provided strong support for this calendar through the surveys we sent out. In addition, our Site-based Decision Making Committee (SBDM) composed of parents, community members, and teachers was very thoughtful and asked good questions as they developed and recommended the calendar for consideration. We are excited about how this will benefit our students and teachers. One of the suggestions provided during the community Q&A sessions regarding the hybrid 4-day calendar option was to provide FAQs regarding the calendar on our website. We have been rolling this out on our webpage and social media pages to answer questions as we begin this transition.
This week our high school students in English 1 and English 2 classes are taking their state required End of Course STAAR exams, one of the requirements for students to meet partial graduation requirements. Over the next several weeks students in grades 3-8 will take their STAAR tests and high school students in US History, Algebra, and Biology will also take their End of Course STAAR exams.
This past weekend, the Junior Class hosted the annual Prom. Despite some snowy weather, the temperature remained above freezing and created a “winter wonderland”-added theme to a fun prom had by all. A special thanks to the Junior class parents who worked tirelessly to decorate, prepare a meal and snacks and put on a great event for our students. Please see the district’s webpage and Facebook page for pictures and more information.
Our high school boys and girls golf teams competed at the district meet this week and one of our students won the individual boys district championship and will advance to the regional golf meet. Both teams claimed bronze medals for finishing 3rd place overall. Our junior high track team traveled to Gruver for their district meet. We are proud of our students’ hard work and perseverance with their events. Overall, we had 32 individuals or teams place in their events with one of our students finishing 1st in his events winning two individual district championships.
The high school district track meet was held last week. We had seven students qualify for the area track meet this week with a district champion in high jump and and a total of 8 different places in the track meet. Additional congratulations go out to our two Academic All State boys basketball players who were selected to the Texas High School Coaches Association All-State Team. Also we had both a senior boy and girl basketball player invited to play in the Golden Spread All Star Game. Also, congratulations goes out to Coach Meek who was named the TABC Middle School Coach of the Year. Please see the district’ webpage and Facebook page for pictures and more information.
We have kicked off our transfer campaign on our website and social media in order to increase student enrollment. An increase of 25 students throughout the district (that’s about two students per grade level or about eight families of three school-age children each) would go a long way in providing the necessary state revenue for our district in order to maintain the level of service we currently provide. Please note that to be eligible to be accepted as a transfer student to Vega ISD, all students must be in good standing with their current school district, have good attendance, and have no discipline issues. Check out our transfer landing page on the district’s website that talks about our school and how to apply for a transfer. If you feel comfortable doing so, please “like” the social media posts and share them on your own social media pages. If you need any help in doing this, please reach out to our office. We would be glad to help. If you know of any family who might be interested in attending an A-Rated district dedicated to student academic success with personalized learning and diverse opportunities, please have them reach out to our campuses or district office for more information.
Thank you,
Jerry Adams
