Longhorn Weekly

Dear Vega ISD Community:

We want to wish our students, families, staff, and our Vega community a very Happy Thanksgiving next week.  The school will be closed all week next week for Thanksgiving break.  We have so much to be thankful for in our community and for the people we get to do life with each and every day.

This past Sunday our pastor talked about the importance of not allowing anything to rob us of our peace or joy.  For me, an important way to protect my peace and joy is to remember to show gratitude and have a spirit of thankfulness flow through me.  Because of this, the reality that we have a day dedicated to Thanksgiving underscores the importance of being thankful and having gratitude.  In fact, there is scientific research to back this up — Harvard researchers show that gratitude is connected to greater happiness, helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.  It seems to me that we are created to show gratitude to others.

Our prayer is for you and your family to feel God’s blessings, especially throughout the Thanksgiving and holiday season and to know that our school district is grateful to our community for your fantastic support and the opportunity to invest in the children of Vega each and every day!

This past week twenty-eight FFA students traveled to Amarillo for the LDE contests.  Both of our Greenhand Skills Teams placed 1st and 2nd in District and will both qualify for the Area competition.  The Greenhand Quiz team placed 8th at District and one of our students was the 8th highest placing individual in the quiz contest.  The Public Relations team placed 5th.  One of the Radio teams placed 5th in the preliminaries and our other Radio team placed 2nd in the preliminaries and 3rd in the Finals.

Basketball season is underway for the girls teams.  Last Thursday the girls junior high basketball teams played Sanford Fritch.  The boys junior high basketball team opened up their season this past Monday when the boys and girls junior high teams traveled to Sunray.  The JV and Varsity girls basketball teams hosted West Plains on Tuesday night.  The Varsity girls basketball team will travel to Canadian to play in their tournament Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Next week the junior high basketball teams will host Spearman on Monday while the JV and Varsity Boys basketball teams open up their season at Happy on Tuesday.

This Friday, our Elementary and Junior High UIL Academic Teams will compete in the District UIL Academic Meet at Frank Philips College in Borger.  Our students have been working hard in their teams and preparing for Friday’s events.  This will be a great experience for our students to be on the college campus at Frank Phillips College and to showcase their hard work.
