Longhorn Weekly

Dear Vega ISD Community:

This past week has been very busy for our students at Vega ISD.  We are appreciative of our PTO who brought treats for our staff this week.  Thank you!

Our 4th and 5th grade students took the state-required STAAR ELAR field test last week while our 3rd and 4th grade students took their STAAR interim assessments this week.  The field tests are required by TEA for districts to give to students.  The state evaluates the tests and determines which questions are good to be used for future state assessments.  The STAAR interim assessments, on the other hand, are useful for our students and teachers because it provides students with an opportunity to practice taking the assessment on the computer, just like they will during the real STAAR test.  More importantly, the interim assessments provide teachers with valuable student performance information to help make instructional decisions for each student to show improvement and growth.  It helps us know what to specifically help our students with in the classroom.

Last weekend our junior high and high school band attended the UIL solo and ensemble contests.  Several of our students made a first division score (the highest possible score) in their solo and ensembles.  Please see the district’s webpage for pictures and more information.

Our powerlifting team traveled to Lubbock to compete in a meet and they did a great job with many of the powerlifters achieving a personal best.  Our Ag students traveled to San Angelo for the Ag Mechanics contest and brought back a bunch of blue ribbons, again.  Many of the projects placed including winning the reserved champion welding trailer.  Be sure to check out the webpage and facebook page for pictures and more information.  There are videos of Mr. Newton interviewing each of the students talking about their specific projects on the FFA Boosters facebook page, which is amazing!

Basketball season is wrapping up for the boys and girls varsity basketball teams.  Last Friday was Senior night for the basketball teams.  The boys final home game will be next Tuesday, February 17th.  The girls will play in the bi-district round of the playoffs against Clarendon in Amarillo next Monday, February 16th.

Our high school students will travel to Amarillo for a practice UIL contest meet as they prepare for district competition next month.

Thank you,

Jerry Adams
