🏫 Will the VATRE Fund the New Part of the School? **No, if approved, the VATRE will not pay for the new part of the school.** The VATRE represents a **12-cent increase to the Maintenance and Operations (M&O) tax rate**, but M&O funds **cannot** be used for construction projects. - Even with the increase, it would still be the **third lowest overall tax rate in the past 10 years** and the **second lowest M&O rate in the past 20 years**. - M&O funds are specifically allocated to support the **maintenance and operation** of the school district, including programs and staff salaries. The **Interest and Sinking (I&S) tax rate** is what provides the funds to pay off the debt for the bond used to build the new part of the school, and the VATRE outcome has **no impact** on the I&S tax rate. ❓Would a 4-Day School Week Fix the Budget Shortfall? **No, a 4-day school week would not resolve our budget shortfall.** For our district, a significant **75.9% of overall expenditures** were for payroll in fiscal year 2023. Most districts that implement a 4-day school week do so as an incentive to attract and retain staff. Importantly, these districts **do not reduce employee salaries**. Instead, staff members work longer hours during the shortened week, and students attend school for extended hours to meet the state’s required number of minutes for the school year.
