Superintendent Update 3/25/24

Dear Vega ISD Community,

This Friday, March 29th, and next Monday, April 1st, are school holidays.  We want to wish our community a Happy Easter and a safe extended weekend.

I was able to witness firsthand this past week how our teachers hold our students to high expectations and how our students respond in a positive and productive manner when held to high expectations.  Sometimes some redirection and correction is involved with achieving high expectations, but when students know that their teachers care for them, the possibilities of success are endless.  I have seen this example play out many times over the past three months and believe this is one of the reasons for the high expectations and academic success of our students.

Report cards went out last week.  If you need any information about your student’s performance in their classes, please feel free to reach out to their teacher for ways we can work together.  This week the ACT was offered for students to take on campus.  This is a great opportunity for students to take this important college entrance exam in a familiar environment. The high school also provided a review session for junior and senior level students to prepare for the TSIA so they will be eligible for enrollment in college level courses, including dual credit courses.

Our junior high and high school track athletes were busy last week braving the weather at their track meets.  Our tennis teams did likewise in Amarillo as well with some of their matches ending in a rain cancellation.  Our elementary students participated in an achievement club field trip for showing growth on their academic assessments.

We want to wish our One Act Play good luck this week at their Bi-District competition.  They have worked hard and their performance is fantastic.  Our tennis teams are competing at District competition this week so be sure to wish them good luck as well.  The junior high track team is competing at their District meet this week so be sure to wish them good luck too.  The golf team’s District meet was postponed due to bad weather so they will resume next week.

Thanks to everyone who completed the stakeholder survey.  We have been sharing the trends we received from the different questions on the survey.  This week we will look at the question:  What are the district’s primary strengths?  The top response we received was “academics” - this is by far the district’s primary strength.  Also mentioned with academics were teachers and students along with community and expectations as strengths.  This, of course, makes sense because when there are expectations of success from the community combined with our teachers being ready to help and support students, there is academic success.  This makes our community of Vega very special.

Thank you,

Jerry Adams
