Longhorn Weekly

Dear Vega ISD Community:

Next week is Spring Break and we hope all of our students and staff enjoy their time off as everyone adjusts to the time change.

Our students have been very busy.  Please see the district’s webpage and Facebook page for pictures and more information.

The Lady Longhorn Basketball All-District Honors were announced this week and eleven of our players were recognized on the All-District Academic Team and four of our players were recognized to the All-District Team.  We are proud of our athletes' hard work on the court and in the classroom.

Five of our girls placed at the regional powerlifting meet last week.  They competed hard against some of the vest lifters in the region and had a great season.

Junior high track had its first track meet of the season last week and the 7th grade girls were the Meet Champions in Muleshoe.  Our 7th grade boys and our 8th graders all worked hard and did a good job at the track meet.

Congratulations to the One Act Play for advancing to Bi-District Competition.  Five of our cast and crew members were recognized for individual awards as well.

The boys golf team competed at the Vega Longhorn Golf Tournament last week and brought home 1st place with golfers placing both 1st and 3rd place overall.  The girls golf team also competed at the Vega Longhorn Golf Tournament and brought home 1st place with golfers also placing 1st and 3rd place overall.

Congratulations to the Band for earning a Division 1 Rating in UIL Sightreading Contest and earning a Division 2 Rating in UIL Concert Contest.

Three of our Ag Mech students traveled to the Austin Rodeo to compete in the Ag Mech contest there and did a great job!  All three earned blue ribbons and they all placed in their project categories.

The Vega Tennis team had another strong showing at the Amarillo Small School Tennis Tournament with five varsity players placing and nine JV players placing.

This week our track teams will host the Longhorn track meets in Vega for junior high and high school.  The golf teams will travel to Palo Duro for their golf meet, the boys powerlifting regional qualifiers will travel to Abilene, and tennis will travel to Reagan County for their tennis meet.

Our high school administered the ACT test to our juniors and any seniors who needed to take the test in preparation for college.  Our 5th and 6th graders are taking their Reading Interim assessment and our 8th graders took their Social Studies interim assessment this week as well to help identify their strengths and areas for improvement as we get closer to the STAAR test later in the semester.

We have kicked off our transfer campaign on our website and social media in order to increase student enrollment.  Last year we were very successful in our transfer campaign as we increased the number of transfer students accepted to our district by 25 students.  Another increase of 25 students throughout the district (that’s about two students per grade level or about eight families of three school-age children each) would go a long way in providing the necessary state revenue for our district in order to maintain the level of service we currently provide.  Please note that to be eligible to be accepted as a transfer student to Vega ISD, all students must be in good standing with their current school district, have good attendance, and have no discipline issues.  Check out our transfer landing page on the district’s website that talks about our school and how to apply for a transfer.  If you feel comfortable doing so, please “like” the social media posts and share them on your own social media pages.  If you need any help in doing this, please reach out to our office. We would be glad to help.  If you know of any family who might be interested in attending an A-Rated district dedicated to student academic success with personalized learning and diverse opportunities on a 4-day hybrid school calendar, please have them reach out to our campuses or district office for more information.

Thank you,

Jerry Adams
